Top 5 Power Outage Hacks for Families

“The power went out last winter, just as we were sitting down to dinner. No warning — just silence. No lights. No heat. If you’ve got kids or depend on your devices, you know how fast things can go from cozy to chaotic. That’s why I swear by these five blackout hacks to keep your family calm, comfortable, and prepared.”

1. Stock Up on Essential Supplies
The first step in preparing for a power outage is to stock up on essential supplies. This includes non-perishable food items, bottled water, and other necessary items like batteries, flashlights, and candles. Make sure to have enough supplies to last your family for at least 72 hours. It’s also a good idea to have a manual can opener on hand in case the power outage affects your electric can opener.

2. Create an Emergency Power Outage Kit
Having an emergency power outage kit ready to go can save you a lot of time and stress during a blackout. Here are some items that you should include in your kit:

– Flashlights and extra batteries
– Candles and matches (last resort)
– Portable stove and fuel – Dont forget about your BBQ or Blackstone.  If it takes propane you can use it during an outage.
– Power bank for charging phones and other devices – If you have Kids or a wife (this is my situation)  that needs there devices this is critical.
– First aid kit
– Cash (in case ATMs are not working and you can get to a store that is open)
– Important documents (such as insurance papers) Another option is Keeping all your docuents in one lock box at all times so you can grab and go if needed)
– Whistle (to signal for help)
– Warm blankets and extra clothes (especially if you dont have an alternat heat source). You can also use blankets to block a doorway to confine a space to keep warmer easier.
– Games and activities for kids – Gotta love the devices for this too.  Occupied kids are calm kids.

3. Use Alternative Light Sources
A power outage can leave your home in complete darkness, making it difficult to navigate and perform daily tasks. Here are some alternative light sources that you can use to brighten up your home during a blackout:

– Lanterns: Battery-powered or solar-powered lanterns are a great source of light during a power outage. They provide enough light to move around and perform tasks.
– Headlamps: These are great for hands-free lighting. You can wear them while cooking, reading, or doing other tasks.
– Glow sticks: These are inexpensive and can provide enough light to move around and find your way in the dark. (Kids think these are fun)
– Candles: Candles are a classic option for lighting during a power outage. Just make sure to use them safely and keep them away from flammable objects. (again, last resort)

4. Keep Your Food Safe
During a power outage, your refrigerator and freezer will not be able to keep your food cold. Here are some tips to keep your food safe during a blackout:

– Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature.
– Use a cooler with ice to store perishable items.
– Eat perishable items first to avoid them going bad.
– If you have a gas stove, you can still cook food. Just make sure to use it safely and keep a window open for ventilation.

5. Stay Entertained
A power outage can be a great opportunity to spend quality time with your family. Here are some ideas to keep everyone entertained:

– Play board games or card games.
– Tell stories and reminisce.
– Have a picnic in your living room.
– Use a portable DVD player or laptop to watch movies. (Hot spot it with your phone)
– Have a scavenger hunt using flashlights.                                                                          – Have a good book and spend some time reading

Bonus Tip: Invest in a Generator
If you live in an area that experiences frequent power outages, it may be worth investing in a generator. This will provide you with a backup power source and keep your essential appliances running during a blackout. Just make sure to follow all safety precautions and never run a generator indoors.  Solar Generators are a great option as well.  Personally I use an ECO Flow solar generator and have a small gas generator to charge it if the solar panels dont charge it enough during the day.  Less gas and noise, safe to have indoors and plug into. (Highly reccomend if you have the means to get one)
